The Ely Society
Ely is a historic Cathedral city under 21st Century pressure to grow and change.
Vision, determination and care are needed both to conserve its built and green heritage and develop its potential for residents, business and tourism.
We are a society of concerned residents which seeks to ensure that development and change will retain and enhance Ely`s distinctiveness into the future and improve the quality of life for those who live in this special place.
We encourage awareness of, and pride in, our City and support its cultural development.
We are a publisher of books on the history of Ely. We arrange a programme of interesting talks and publish a Newsletter.
Established in 1971 to resist the environmental destruction of the post-war years, we are the Civic Society for the City of Ely, having a membership drawn largely from the residents of the City. We are dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of this historic place and our objectives have remained constant since the Society was formed:
Encourage awareness of, and pride in, the City of Ely
Safeguard the character of Ely
Support the development of the social, economic and cultural potential of the community
Organise an annual programme of meetings, events and visits on a wide range of local interests
The Society continuously monitors and reviews all proposals for development or change published by the District and County Councils. In recent years these have included the Local Development Framework, the Masterplan for the City of Ely, proposals for a Country Park and the town Transport Strategy. Planning applications submitted to the District Council are examined by a Sub-Committee and independent views are put forward on key issues that affect the City and its environs.
Although there may now be a greater awareness of the City’s outstanding inheritance, the current social, commercial and political pressures to build, change or replace within the Conservation Area continue to demand close watchfulness by the Ely Society to prevent damage to the historic environment. Vision and care are needed to ensure that the quality of our City is conserved and enhanced for the benefit of present and future generations.
The Society is a publisher of many books and booklets on the history of Ely and the surrounding area and has a forward programme of new titles.
The Society provides a programme of talks and presentations on subjects of local and wider interest, to which visitors are most welcome to attend.
The Society is a friendly membership based organisation independent of any commercial, official or political influence. It is managed and driven by the elected Committee, supported by sub-committees and working groups, and all members have the opportunity to participate in these interesting activities.
