COUNCIL REQUESTS BOUNDARY COMMISSION TO REVIEW CURRENT PLANS FOR LITTLEPORT

Following this evening’s full council meeting, East Cambridgeshire District Council will propose that the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) reviews its current proposals for new constituency boundaries.

This is the second phase of consultation taken by the BCE. Initial proposals for new parliamentary boundaries split East Cambridgeshire across three constituencies. The majority of the district was placed into South East Cambridgeshire, Downham Villages and Sutton formed part of North East Cambridgeshire constituency with Fenland, and Littleport was included within the new South West Norfolk constituency alongside wards from Breckland and King’s Lynn.

Although minor amendments were made to the southern section of the proposed South East Cambridgeshire constituency, the boundaries affecting East Cambridgeshire are unchanged from the initial proposals.

The response agreed by full council provides an alternative constituency arrangement that could be used to keep Littleport as part of the North East Cambridgeshire constituency. This arrangement meets the statutory criteria and respects local government boundaries and the local ties that would be broken by the changes currently proposed.

Anna Bailey, Deputy Leader at East Cambridgeshire District Council, said “We believe that the current proposals by the BCE are not in the best interests of our residents, especially those in Littleport. By living, working and providing services to the area, we are one of the best positioned organisations to offer an alternative that truly supports the needs of Littleport and our district. However, it is just as important for our residents to ensure they have their say and get involved in the consultation.”

This is the last opportunity for people to comment on the new Parliamentary constituencies. The consultation closes on Monday 11th December. For more information visit: https://www.bce2018.org.uk/
