Ely Consort: ‘Music for the Queen of Heaven’ – Saturday 21st October, 7pm – Ely Cathedral
Saturday 21st October, 7pm
Music for the Queen of Heaven
In the first half in the Presbytery all the music will be based on plainsong from 12-20C. Dame Emma Kirkby, , will sing two pieces by Hildegard de Bingen backed by members of the Chamber Choir of the 21C from London, and two local choirs, Ely Consort and Cadenza, will sing pieces by Dufay, Tallis, Palestrina, White, Durufle and Dubra.
The second half will be in the Lady Chapel with different settings of Ave Maria from the 15-20C and Emma Kirkby will sing a piece by Barbara Strozzi. Cadenza will sing the Ave Maria settings by Josquin and Parsons and the choirs in the first half will join others to form the St Etheldreda Singers and fill the Lady Chapel with spectacular sounds in this magnificent space as they perform music by Bruckner, Rachmaninov, Biebl, Gorecki and Dubra. The thinking behind the choice of music and how it links with the architecture will be described by John Maddison at the start of the concert.
Ten years ago all 300 seats in a similar fund-raising concert sold out in advance of the concert and early purchase from the Cathedral Box Office is recommended. All the professionals are performing free of charge, the costs of the concert have already been met by individual contributions from members of the Order of St Etheldreda, and the hope is that more than £11,000 can be raised for Ely Cathedral Music.
