SUPERHERO SET TO CHAIR SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING ON RECYCLING

A team of junior recyclers have been invited to hold their school council meeting in the East Cambridgeshire District Council chamber – chaired by a special guest.

The group of 32 children from Littleport Community Primary School will be joined by Michael, the recycling superhero for the district who was designed by pupil Brooke Smith, age nine.

Brooke, a year four student, and her eco council will be given a tour of the council offices and meet Councillor Michael Rouse and Vice Chairman of the council Lis Every.

Councillor Rouse said: “The children will learn a little bit about democracy and the importance of the voting process as well as what it is like to be a councillor and our role in the community.

“They will then hold their school meeting followed by a vote on the implementation of more stringent recycling practices at school. We have arranged for them to have an official ballot paper and declaration form and John Hill, Chief Executive Officer at East Cambridgeshire District Council will declare the result.

“This is the first time this school has ever held a council meeting in council chambers and we are excited to be inspiring a new generation about politics.

“Brooke and her school was instrumental in helping us create Michael, a superhero who has been busy flying around East Cambridgeshire to teach us all about the importance of recycling and so it’s very exciting that Michael will be making an appearance.”

The Eco Council is made up of children age six to 11.

This year Michael, who was brought to life by professional costume makers from Brooke’s drawing, has formed the central role in an interactive performance workshop delivered to primary school children.

He has also made several guest appearances at various fairs, fetes and events around the district.

Michael is at the forefront of an ongoing council-run campaign to improve recycling rates.
